The Dolomites

The DolomitesThe more than 3,000-meter-high mountains of the Dolomites were formed from the reefs of the warm Triassic seas. Because of the highly stable geological base, the structure in particular of the western Dolomites have remained relatively untouched by Alpine folding. This is the only place in the world where fossil reef structures can be not only scientifically studied, but also simply appreciated for their wondrous beauty.
